While Google has been making some changes to the standard SEO requirements over the last few months Red Thread Creative have been busy improving website SEO for our clients.
After researching these new changes to SEO, we tested many websites with some tried and tested SEO tools and also some new ones. We discovered most businesses are still not getting what they deserve in terms of robust Search Engine Optimisation.
Even websites with good SEO scores are still making rookie SEO mistakes
Our SEO audits help clients to better understand what their competitors are doing about SEO. These often tell us that website designers are not always creating pages with unique content or unique meta-data. Other common mistakes we see are duplicate titles and page descriptions.
Page content also needs to be unique. it is not hard to find this out even if you’re not an SEO expert. The key is not only keeping new content unique, but also focussing on how well that content is written.
Another poor SEO tactic that we sometimes see SEO developers using, is forcing in Keyword phrases that sound a bit odd, for the sake of achieving a good ranking position by getting lots of active searches every month. This too is not a good idea. It is much better to focus on relevant Keywords and support them with relevant page content.
Canonical URLs are good
One way to boost a specific page’s SEO score is to create similar pages of content and concatenate the URLs. That means you basically point the SEO strength of a similar page of content to existing page where you’d like to improve the SEO strength.
Frequently Asked Questions are important
This recent SEO development is establishing the FAQ as an important element of any website. Most people use Google to answer their questions on any given subject. If you can ask that same question and answer it you’re onto a winner. The key here is how you build that FAQ. The code (markup) of the structure of the FAQ is what makes it work for you much harder. So, always construct your FAQ with your customers in mind.
Onpage SEO score should be the best it can be
You might be asking yourself “what is Onpage SEO”? ‘Onpage SEO’ is the Search Engine Optimisation that can be carried out on the content of your website page. We look at all of the elements of pages’ content and even look at how well the page loads. Then we add it together to create a value. This ‘Onpage SEO’ should really be compared to a specific Keyword or Keyword Phrase, then you can really get to improving the page’s SEO score. After comparing the SEO to a specific Keyword Phrase you should make sure that you cover the following Onpage SEO basic elements:
- Make sure your page titles use the Keyword; The optimal title contains between 30 – 60 characters. This is to make sure the title is visible in the Google result and also has a description of the content on the web page. The keyword should be mentioned in the title and the optimal amount of mentions is two times. The first mention of the keyword should be made as soon as possible.
- Page headings must use the Keyword; Every web page should have a H1 heading with less than 40 characters that describes the content of the web page. The content of the title and H1 should differ from one another. Only one H1 should exist on a page. The keyword should be mentioned in all headings and the sooner it’s mentioned the better.
- Make sure your Keyword appears in the body text; Every web page should have at least 500 words in the body text. This shows Google that there is actual content on the web page. The keyword should be mentioned at least three times throughout the body text.
- The Meta-tags must be good; The meta description is the description of your web page as shown in the Google-search-results. That’s why it is super important to mention your Keyword as early as possible.
- Media must also use your Keyword; Having images of the keyword on your web page is important. It is equally important to mention the keyword in the alt-tag of the image containing the keyword. Also make sure the alt-tag is describing the image.
- Speed of your website is one of the most important improvements you can make; it’s important to have a short response time, to make your web page as accessible as possible. Try to keep it below 0.2 seconds.
- Make sure the URLs are great; an optimal URL contains the keyword and uses HTTPS encryption to ensure a secure connection.
