An awareness campaign to highlight creative marketing communication services in Bristol, to businesses on our doorstep.
Having recently relocated to superb new offices in Bradley Stoke, Bristol, we wasted no time in erecting the Red Thread Creative outdoor sign to announce our arrival in this thriving business community.

We now needed to follow our own marketing ideas on business communication and find a way to let the hundreds of businesses within a stone’s throw of our new office, know about Red Thread Creative’s marketing communication and advertising agency services. After all, the outdoor signage alone gives very little away.

An advertising campaign for an advertising agency?

As a creative advertising agency, this would be a breeze. However, without a targetted advertising vehicle, this could prove costly and ineffective.

Some media-buying – a radio campaign perhaps?

Our expertise in targetted media buying would surely prove effective. The media pack for Bradley Stoke Radio (103.4FM) however, indicated that as a local community station, we were unlikely to reach a sufficient number of company marketing personnel.

After serious contemplation of several marketing ideas, we had to hold up our hands and admit that, in this instance, simplest and most direct was best.

A simple business communication for a simple awareness campaign

When considering all the elements that impact on a successful awareness campaign – audience, budget, message and outcome – with a list of around 200 businesses, it would be just as cost-effective to call each one up individually and invite them out for a drink or a coffee at our’s. The latter would be preferable, but making the first contact with the right individual was key.

Marketing communication strategy and investment

The marketing communication strategy was simple:

1.Make contact with the person from each business within a mile of us that was responsible for their company’s marketing communications or advertising.
2.Create a standard mail-piece that communicated an overview of our offering.
3.Put together a standard letter, printed on our letterheads and with the mail-piece.
4.Create a personalised, bespoke introductory hand-out and hand-deliver it to the person concerned (ensuring it gets to the right individual).

The investment for targetted marketing communication:

Approximately three weeks on the phone (including follow-ups)
£100 worth of digital printing and a pack of envelopes.

The outcome of targetted marketing communication:

We successfully called up around 150 businesses and of these, we secured the names of 78 individuals responsible for company marketing communications and/or advertising. These individuals all received the personalised letter and mail-piece and were followed-up by phone on the following weeks.

As a result of all this hard work and time investment, we have now secured business from three new clients with a further five waiting in the wings.

We are sure you would agree that we know best how marketing communication works for unique situations.
